ISDN Switch Off – The steps your business needs to take

In Short

It’s been widely reported that by 2025 BT will have switched off the outdated technology of ISDN fixed line networks in favour of an IP based model for voice communication. But do you really need to take action now?

It’s been widely reported that by 2025 BT will have switched off the outdated technology of ISDN fixed line networks in favour of an IP based model for voice communication.

We are still 3 years away from the end date, however there is no time to delay in preparation for this; already the process has reached significant landmark dates that could potentially be affecting your business communications.

So, what action do you need to take now?

Why is the IDSN being switch off?

ISDN is a technology that has been around since the 1980’s which allowed voice and data to be transmitted over digital lines. Ground-breaking in its time, it has now been surpassed by the rise of voice over IP (VoIP) which is more flexible, cheaper and, more importantly, faster!

Why is VoIP the preferred choice for phone calls?

As internet speeds have increased significantly thanks to fibre internet connections, this has driven BT’s decision to eradicate the IDSN lines.

Choosing VoIP for your telecommunications eliminates the need for expensive phone lines for your business communications. Not only that, but VoIP allows flexibility for business teams that are working remotely as, regardless of your location, VoIP allows teams to access business phone lines wherever there is an internet connection. Over time, many have chosen to make that move before the ISDN switch off due to VoIP being so much more flexible and readily available.

VoIP is flexible and scalable allowing integration with mobiles and, combined with a Unified  Communications strategy, allows your teams to work flexibly and securely.

What is the timeline for the ISDN Switch off?

BT first announced the switch off in 2015, allowing 10 years for businesses to make the transition. However, since 2020, BT have been slowly stopping new ISDN lines being purchased in certain areas so essentially you may be prevented from purchasing new ISDN services should you need them. Contact us if you would like to find out if your area is affected now and take a look at our timeline on our website to keep up to date with the ISDN switch off.

The action steps for the ISDN Switch off

  1. Review your current ISDN contract

This may seem an obvious point, but do not renew your current contract and in fact check when your contract is up for renewal. This may help you choose the date you should plan to migrate by.

  1. Consider what you need for your business

Think about how your team work. Do you need ultimate flexibility that VoIP allows you? Or can you consider SIP lines that are the perfect halfway house that will support a slower transition.

  1. Plan a migration date

With some areas already on stop-sell, this may be a key driver in your decision to make the move. Regardless of that, you should not leave this until 2025 as it will limit your opportunity to plan and be ready for the ISDN switch off.

  1. Choose a telecommunications provider

Finding the right provider to support your migration is integral to success. Essentially you need support from a partner that can identify what your business needs, ensure a smooth transition and work with you to ensure you are upgraded in a timely, cost-effective manner.

UK businesses cannot continue risking reputation with shoddy security, says Espria

Sophos’ 2024 Threat Report recently highlighted ransomware as the biggest existential cyber threat to small businesses. While cyberattacks on large companies and government agencies may receive more news coverage, Sophos reported that SMB’s are generally more vulnerable to cybercriminals and suffer more proportionally from the results of a breach.

Peace of mind: Cloud is key in scaling systems to your business needs

Meeting the demands of the modern-day SMB is one of the challenges facing many business leaders and IT operators today. Traditional, office-based infrastructure was fine up until the point where greater capacity was needed than those servers could deliver, vendor support became an issue, or the needs of a hybrid workforce weren’t being met. In the highly competitive SMB space, maintaining and investing in a robust and efficient IT infrastructure can be one of the ways to stay ahead of competitors.

UK SMEs should prioritise creating disaster recovery plans for cloud data to ensure business continuity and prevent data loss amid rising cyber-attacks

Cybercrime is a significant issue for businesses of all sizes in the UK. Although we usually hear more about cybersecurity incidents impacting large businesses, smaller businesses are also a target
